Spaces for sustainable production, co-creation and community building

How can workspaces be reconfigured to support the work of creative professionals? How does their work affect their immediate environment and how can it promote social interaction in the city? The “Creatives for Vienna – Making Spaces 2024” competition awarded funding for eleven projects that provide space for creative work in Vienna. 

Creative communities need space for sustainable collaboration, production and exchange. Some 81 concepts aimed at opening up new opportunities for the work of Vienna’s creative professionals were submitted by enterprises and associations from all areas of the creative industries. 

Ten projects came out on top and were awarded prize money of €15,000 each by a jury of experts. Another project was awarded €5,000. The winning projects are as diverse as Vienna’s creative industries – from a former hydraulic engineering laboratory transformed into an art and design hub to a club space made from old shipping containers. Through innovative ideas for the use of space, the award-winning projects foster creative collaboration in Vienna and boost sustainable urban development.

Creatives for Sustainability – SALETTL is part of the Kleine Stadt community farm in Vienna’s Donaustadt district. The light and airy wooden building offers work and event spaces for creatives, with a focus on sustainability. Its programme ranges from residencies and workshops to live podcasts.

This project is based at a former hydraulic engineering laboratory in a listed building in Vienna’s 9th district. It will be transformed into a lively, productive hub for art and design, and opened up for public use as a sustainable working and creative space, hosting events such as the Markterei farmers market.

HEILIG – A Club Concept is a community music club that uses old shipping containers to house a new venue in Heiligenstadt. The indoor club provides the necessary infrastructure and space to host for artistic and musical events until the early hours of the morning.

HEILIG. A Place for Artistic Production. Showcasing. Community. is an interdisciplinary project based in the former office building of the snow removal services in Meidling. It comprises indoor and outdoor spaces for workshops, artist residencies and exhibitions. Seamlessly connected production and exhibition spaces and shared resources make this a vibrant venue for artistic encounters.

Creatives for Vienna Wettbewerb 2024 - prämiertes Projekt: Never at Home im ehemaligen ORF Funkhaus
Never At Home x Funkhaus is an interdisciplinary interim use project. The previously vacant property of the former ORF broadcasting house in Vienna’s 4th district is being revitalised as a production and exhibition space focusing on music, sound and media art. The project sparks active dialogue with the architectural features of the building.

Palace in Pixels: Digital Resonance Space is a hybrid project designed as an extension of the Palais Rössl studio and exhibition space in Wieden. A digital space for creative collaboration and exhibitions is being created to supplement the physical production spaces for artists.
