Creatives for Vienna X OPEN HOUSE WIEN
Architecture behind the scenes
During the OPEN HOUSE WIEN festival, taking place from 25 to 27 September, visitors can join free guided tours with volunteers between 10 am and 5 pm and explore buildings that are normally not open to the public.
At Nordwestbahnhof, an area undergoing major urban transformation, tours on Sunday, 27 September, from 10 am to 5 pm will showcase three projects on the site: Biofabrique Vienna, a Vienna Business Agency initiative focused on bioregional material innovation, as well as two award-winning projects from the Creatives for Vienna – Making Spaces competition, demonstrating how creative initiatives can enrich public spaces and help Vienna address social and climate-related challenges. These include the shading system Shade Commons by Konstantin Kim, Ekaterina Korchagina and Osvaldo Almendra, and the mini-golf course W(h)ole in One by Tracing Spaces.
Projects at Nordwestbahnhof at OPEN HOUSE WIEN 2026
1.
Shade Commons – Konstantin Kim, Ekaterina Korchagina & Osvaldo Almendra
The shading system Shade Commons by Konstantin Kim, Ekaterina Korchagina and Osvaldo Almendra draws inspiration from horticultural structures to provide protection from extreme weather conditions while creating welcoming public spaces in the face of climate change.
2.
Biofabrique Vienna – Vienna Business Agency
Biofabrique Vienna, a project of the Vienna Business Agency, is dedicated to material innovation for the creative industries. Located at the former Nordwestbahnhof site, it focuses on bioregional design and provides a space for collaborative work. During the guided tours, visitors will gain insight into the approaches and interdisciplinary working methods of Biofabrique Vienna, while exploring research outcomes developed to date, ranging from tiles to natural dyes.
3.
(W)Hole in One – Tracing Spaces & Team
(W)Hole in One by Tracing Spaces & Team transforms the Nordwestbahnhof’s vacant grounds into a small urban golf course combined with an ecological learning trail. The project playfully highlights the potential that emerges during the site’s transformation into a new, environmentally sustainable neighbourhood. After the tour, participants are invited to play a round of urban golf.
By attending the event, you consent to the use and publication of photographs taken during the event to depict the activities of the Vienna Business Agency on its website, its social media channels and in print media.
