“Industrial design is in our DNA”

This folding bike’s features were quickly decided: it should be lightweight and designed for everyday use, easy to steer and suitable for city streets, and have zero compromises in terms of design or technology. Business economist Valerie Wolff and designer Valentin Vodev teamed up with VELLO Bike to develop a self-charging, folding e-bike for the city.

In 2017, the startup secured €1 million in investment through crowdfunding. “This allowed us to raise more funding, and we also got great feedback from customers around the world,” says co-founder Wolff.

That feedback proved instrumental in the development of the folding bike – a process that took over two years from the initial idea to the finished item ready for use. “The bicycle is a complex product, and we manufacture it here in Vienna. If, say, the saddle’s missing then nothing works,” says Wolff. As a result, the VELLO Bike in Vienna is dependent on the reliability of global supply chains.

“As a company based in Vienna, we’ve received great support, which helps us handle the day-to-day challenges that arise,” she comments.

The Vienna Business Agency contributed to the funding of the internationalisation and the technical development of another bike – the Smart Utility Bike (SUB). The SUB is a lightweight e-cargo bike with a modular design that allows it to adapt to the different needs of users. So the funding supported the technical development of a lightweight, electric and versatile cargo bike for different users.

“What would we like to see in Vienna? More flexible onboarding for new team members, as we’re currently looking for 12 new employees,” says Wolff. The company’s location in the heart of Vienna helps it attract new specialists. “Having our headquarters, warehouse and workshop on one site here streamlines processes and makes it easier to enthuse people about what we have to offer,” says this keen entrepreneur. “For me, the best thing is coming across VELLO riders who didn’t necessarily get the bike from me. We’ve grown as a company and as a team, and now I’m seeing the results on the streets!”

Die Eigenschaften des Faltrads waren schnell festgelegt: es soll leicht und für den täglichen Gebrauch sein, gut lenkbar und für die Stadt geeignet sein, außerdem soll es keine Kompromisse in puncto Design und Technik geben. Mit VELLO Bike haben sich Betriebswirtin Valerie Wolff und Designer Valentin Vodev zusammengetan und ein selbstladendes E-Faltrad (der Motor unterstützt die Leistung, mit regenerativem Bremsen, dann wird Energie zurückgewonnen) für die Stadt entwickelt.

Schon 2017 hat sich das Startup 1 Million Euro über Crowdfunding gesichert. „Damit haben wir nicht nur Geld eingesammelt, sondern auch sehr gutes Feedback von Kund*innen rund um die Welt bekommen“, so Co-Founder Wolff.

Dieses Feedback über das Crowdfunding ist sehr wertvoll und hilft bei der ständigen Weiterentwicklung des Faltrads – ein Prozess der von der ersten Idee bis zum einsatzbereiten Faltrad immerhin zwei Jahre dauert. „Ein Fahrrad ist ein komplexes Produkt und wir fertigen es in Wien. Das bedeutet, fehlt zum Beispiel der Sattel, geht nichts mehr“, so Wolff. Das heißt, VELLO Bike ist auch in Wien von der Zuverlässigkeit globale Lieferketten abhängig.

Die Wirtschaftsagentur Wien förderte die Internationalisierung und die technische Weiterentwicklung zum Smart Utility Bike. Das sogenannte „SUB“ ist ein leichtes E-Lastenfahrrad, das durch seine Modularität an verschiedene Bedürfnisse von Anwender*innen angepasst werden kann. Die Förderung der Wirtschaftsagentur Wien unterstützte die technische Weiterentwicklung zu einem leichten, elektrischen und wendigen Lastenrad für verschiedene Anwender*innen in der Stadt.

„Was wir uns in Wien wünschen? Einen flexibleren Einstieg in unser Team: Gerade suchen wir 12 neue Mitarbeitende“, so Wolff. Der Standort mitten in Wien hilft, neue Fachkräfte zu finden. „Wenn die Zentrale, das Lager und die Werkstatt hier vor Ort sind, lassen sich Prozesse schlanker gestalten und leichter Menschen für uns begeistern“, so die begeisterte Unternehmerin. „Das schönste für mich ist, zufällig VELLO Fahrer*innen zu begegnen, die das Rad nicht unbedingt von mir ausgehändigt bekommen haben. Wir sind als Unternehmen und Team gewachsen, und das sehe ich auf der Straße!
