With a research quota of 3.55 percent Vienna is one of the top regions in the EU. The number of research companies in Vienna increased by 300 percent in the past 15 years. A total of approx. 1,000 companies and more than 40,000 people are involved in research work at universities, centers of excellence and research-based and innovative companies. Many leading companies benefit from working with Viennese research institutions.
Altogether, there are around 1,500 research institutions in Vienna. Currently, the budget for research and development in Vienna is EUR 3.18 billion or 3.5 percent of Viennese economic output.
