City of Vienna seeks sustainable drainage solutions
In urban areas, water is a significant factor in efforts to adapt to climate change. On the one hand, heavy precipitation events are increasing in frequency and intensity; on the other, the number of heat waves in cities is also on the rise. We need innovative solutions if we want to retain the quality of life to which we are accustomed.
What was the brief?
The City of Vienna and Wien Kanal were searching for solutions surrounding the sustainable drainage and use of rainwater in the city. The goal was to counteract both the formation of urban heat islands and the risk of localised flooding. Rainwater should be stored locally, if possible: for instance, it could be channelled back into the water system through vegetation and used to water the city’s plants and trees. Healthy, well-watered plants and trees improve urban quality of life through evaporation and by providing shade.
