City of Vienna seeks sustainable drainage solutions
In urban areas, water is a significant factor in efforts to adapt to climate change. On the one hand, heavy precipitation events are increasing in frequency and intensity; on the other, the number of heat waves in cities is also on the rise. We need innovative solutions if we want to retain the quality of life to which we are accustomed.
What’s the brief?
The City of Vienna and Wien Kanal are searching for solutions surrounding the sustainable drainage and use of rainwater in the city. The goal is to counteract both the formation of urban heat islands and the risk of localised flooding. Rainwater should be stored locally, if possible: for instance, it could be channelled back into the water system through vegetation and used to water the city’s plants and trees. Healthy, well-watered plants and trees improve urban quality of life through evaporation and by providing shade.
What’s on offer?
Collaboration, an open exchange as well as specialist and process-based expertise. €15,000 in prize money is offered for the three best ideas: First place will be rewarded with €5,000, second place will receive €3,000 and third place €2,000. Wien Kanal will award an additional €5,000 to the most innovative idea.
