Experience the real Vienna in the Grätzlhotel
Grätzlhotel with the largest hotel lobby in the world
In the city – endless expanses. It was the year 2011, when the three up-and-coming architects Theresia Kohlmayr, Jonathan Lutter, and Christian Knapp had the idea to transform empty, unused stores into trendy hotel suites. To guide urban astronauts into the city on previously undiscovered paths, to lead them into new Grätzl and popular shops. And all of that while living in the middle of the most exciting corner of the real Vienna. They will discover secret hotspots of the city, rarely visited by tourists.
Live in former commercial locations
The passion for traveling connected the URBANAUTS founding team while they were still university students. Their interest expanded into rest areas in urban centers, and solving the problem of reusing empty storefronts located in desirable neighborhoods.
“The ways that people travel has changed. More people are looking for individualized stays off the beaten path of regular tourist areas. This is what we want to offer travelers with our hotel concept,” explains Theresia Kohlmayr, manager of the URBANAUTS Hospitality Group, which operates the Grätzlhotel.
This unusual hotel in Vienna now consists of 21 4* suites surrounding Belvedere, Meidlinger Markt, and Karmelitermarkt. Whether you choose a trendy Street Suite or a comfortable Garden Suite, all rooms are lovingly furnished. An example is the “Die Schneiderin” (“The Tailor”) suite, which opened in 2011 as the first prototype at the Karmelitermarkt. The business for which each location was previously used is the connecting thread for both the design and the name.
The largest hotel lobby in the world
“All types of people stay with us,” explains Kohlmayr. “From those who prefer individual trips, to families, to the typical Vienna tourist who may be a little more adventurous and willing to try a different type of hotel.”
Each of the three Grätzl features so-called "Fellows", cooperation partners who also function as a type of “concierge”. They are the go-to source for guests and offer suggestions for excursions and local culinary destinations. “We do not offer meal service to our guests, so they will be looking for suggestions for a breakfast location, or a nice restaurant nearby, or grocery shopping at a local market. This, in turn, also supports the restaurants and shops located nearby.”
Secret regional tips included
URBANAUTS sources local products when decorating and furnishing the rooms: all the suites include high-end bath products from the Saint Charles Apotheke. “We want to encourage our guests to discover new specialty shops along with the classic tourist locations in Vienna, and pass their secret tips on.” enthuses the manager. The URBANAUTS Hospitality Group are essentially worldwide pioneers in this field and would like to eventually implement this hotel concept in other cities.
