Robots for Children
And, of course, they are not fighting robots like the ones in science fiction blockbusters. One of these small figures won’t bring breakfast to bed and buzz a staccato “good morning” either. However, robots create Robo, in the form of colourful, Lego-like components which, equipped with sensors, motors, and other electronic components, can easily be assembled and controlled on a smartphone or tablet using an intuitive programming interface via an app. These construction sets are for children five years of age or older. This will show kids at an early age how fun technology can be, and they do not yet have to read to do so;
The ideas simply come to them. This young company, with roots in the Technical University, has not only collected various prizes such as the Start-Up Award in the “Start-up pitch” category from the Vienna Business Agency, but also won trend business magazine’s trend@venture contest, and began a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter and completed it with resounding success. The project was already fully-funded at 261 percent three weeks before the end of the campaign, which means that the original funding goal of 70,000 dollars had long since been reached. And now it is entering production. The Robo construction set is slated to cost 99 Euro.
The idea for Robo was conceived by then-student of the Technical University of Vienna, Rustem Akishbekov, who today is the company’s CEO. Co-founder and current COO, Anna Iarotska, had this to say about the collaboration with the Vienna Business Agency: “We were not only very well-advised, but the budget necessary for founding the company also came in the form of a grant from the Vienna Business Agency. Lastly, the Start-Up Award brought us the PR we needed.”
