“Bon appétit” instead of “Bon voyage”
Carrots with two legs, tomatoes with three cheeks, such peculiar vegetables used to go straight from the field into the trash. The Vienna delivery service and catering company „iss mich!“ wanted to put an end to this and processes these “misfits” into organic dishes.
Too big, too small? Too thick, too thin? These are the questions the trade and food industry usually asks of the young vegetables. Once answered with YES, cucumber & co. have no chance to make it to the supermarket shelves and on our plates. Although the quality of the products is impeccable, 30 - 40% of the vegetable harvest gets disposed in Austria every year. That is equivalent to around 168,000 tons. And exactly that is being addressed at „iss mich!“. The goal is to minimize this waste and use it for something good.
„iss mich!“ processes these peculiar vegetables to soups and stews and delivers them by bicycle in Vienna. You can order at home, at the office or supply an entire party with a catering contract. It goes without saying that everything in the kitchen is organic and only seasonal produce is used. The „iss mich!“ all about sustainability corporate concept is also reflected in the packaging of the products. The containers are reusable and contain no disposables parts. Empty containers can be returned based on the refundable bottle principle at delivery or at the Lunzers Maß-Greißlerei - currently the first trading partner of „iss mich!“.
Social responsibility is also an essential part of the corporate strategy. Through a collaboration with mother-child homes of Caritas, „iss mich!“ provides two young mothers entrance to the labour market. Moreover, „iss mich!“ employs returnees to the labour market, who spend part of their training in the kitchen.
Now „iss mich!“ wants to grow further and has found support at the Vienna Business Agency. Founder Tobias Judmaier said the following, “the support of the Vienna Business Agency allows us to create a modern online store in order to optimize our sales department. At the same time, we are also expanding our bicycle fleet and improving the equipment of our production kitchen. This in turn creates jobs which we offer to people who have difficulty gaining access to the labour market.”
