Ultrashort Laser Pioneers
Femtolasers /Spectra-Physics Vienna is a Viennese company headquartered in Favoriten. The company researches and produces highly developed ultrashort pulse lasers, also known as femtosecond lasers. Femtosecond lasers are used in a variety of applications including research into future energy sources, medical diagnosis and treatment.
Since 2015 Femtolasers /Spectra-Physics Vienna is part of the US company Newport Corporation, one of the leading players in the field of femtosecond lasers worldwide.
Superior performance while consuming less energy
From a simple laser pointer to the playback of optical storage media, all the way up to the laser scalpel for medical uses: the amount of applications for lasers is huge.
The advantage of the ultrashort laser developed in Vienna includes the fact that it provides the highest level of laser performance while producing an extremely low level of heat, making it extremely compact. As explained by the plant manager, Andreas Stingl, “You shouldn’t need a power plant just to run a microscope”.
Sponsoring continuing development
A reduction in the amount of energy used is not the only advantage of these lasers. It is also anticipated that the lasers will be applied in areas which they are currently not being used due to their high prices. This includes areas such as diagnostic uses in medicine, biology, quality assurance, and even applications in 3-D printers. “We are working in a research- intensive environment where it is enormously important to be more than a step ahead of the competition”, according to Stingl when discussing the importance of sponsoring research in his area of interest. The company currently generates annual sales of approximately €7.5 million.
From TU spinoff to an international player
Femtolasers was founded in 1997 from a TU spinoff. It has been part of the US company Newport Corporation, one of the leading players in the field of femtosecond lasers worldwide, since 2015. Their laser segment, Spectra-Physics, has been strengthened by the addition of femtosecond lasers. The efficiency of the company has been improved by the buyout (e.g. through better terms and conditions when purchasing components) as well as international competitiveness. Femtolasers /Spectra-Physics Vienna is considered one of the pioneers of the production of ultrashort laser systems in the mid-1990s. Customers include research institutes conducting basic physics research in Germany, Switzerland, the USA, China, and Japan.
