Following in Einstein's footsteps with Viennese technology
At present, the company has become a talking point as an external research partner of the American research consortium LIGO. LIGO announced that they have for the very first time been able to detect the gravitational waves predicted by Albert Einstein. Future gravitational wave detectors are to incorporate mirror technology patented by CMS to facilitate the development of improved optical coatings. Read more in CMS' current press release.
Mirror technologies as precise as never before
Crystalline Mirror Solutions GmbH, founded in 2013, has become one of the leading producers in the world of high-precision optics for laser systems. The origins of the startup are in the physics faculty of the University of Vienna.
Markus Aspelmeyer and his colleague Garrett Cole developed a new mirror technology during experimental basic research in quantum physics. The high degree of innovation allowed them to place the mirrors in laboratories worldwide within a short amount of time. The often-quoted wow principle of the Crystalline Mirror Solutions (CMS) is not easy to understand, especially for amateurs. This did not stop the young company from garnering the startup award in the category “Product and Services” from the Vienna Business Agency. They also were awarded the first prize in the GEWINN-Young Company Competition in the High Tech category.
In general terms, the patented CMS process has managed to attain a degree of accuracy and stability never before achieved in optical precision measurement of diverse processes. On the one hand, CMS products enable lasers to be built for the measurement of time and space in basic physics research. On the other hand, they also have commercial value in the possible use for earth and satellite-based navigation systems and function as an optical timer for broadband communication to increase the data rate.
Crystalline Mirror Solutions is an excellent example of building bridges between research and business, between applied research and commercial use.
"Since our inception, the business agency has supported us with suggestions, helped us improve our plans and company communication, and – last but not least – has provided us with valuable contacts. We are especially thankful for the honor of receiving the Startup Award. It is a wonderful acknowledgment of our work and has already opened doors for us in that it has allowed us to come into contact with important and interesting people in the Vienna startup scene,” CEO Christian Pawlu, as he discussed the company’s collaboration with the Vienna Business Agency.
