The Grand Decoration of Honour in Gold for Services to the City of Vienna was today awarded to the founder of the Central European University.
George Soros received the city’s highest honour for his commitment to an open society and democracy at a ceremony at Vienna City Hall. This marked the Central European University’s move to settle in Vienna. Its academic programme started in the city’s 10th district in September of this year. Mayor Michael Ludwig presented Soros with the honour during the ceremony and emphasised that the CEU’s decision to settle in Vienna represented a valuable contribution to the city’s development as a location for science and business.
A host of distinguished guests attended the ceremony at Vienna City Hall, including former Hungarian Foreign Minister Kinga Göncz, former Czech foreign minister Karel Schwarzenberg, CEU Rector Michael Ignatieff and Prof. Paul Lendvai. Former President of Austria Heinz Fischer delivered the presentation speech in his honour.
