George Soros receives the Grand Decoration of Honour in Gold for Services to the City of Vienna
Highest award of the federal state for great commitment to education and commitment to human coexistence.
George Soros, founder of the Central European University (CEU) and Honorary Chairman, receives the Grand Decoration of Honour in Gold for Services to the City of Vienna. This was announced by Michael Ludwig, Mayor of the City of Vienna, on 29 March.
George Soros will officially receive the honor after the Government of the State of Vienna makes its formal decision on April 9. With his "great commitment to education and human coexistence in Vienna as well as to the scientific and business location of Vienna, he has made a valuable contribution to the positive further development of these areas," says the reason for the application.
In December 2018, the CEU announced that it would open its new campus in Vienna. In the winter semester 2019, university operations will start in Favorites. In the long term, the university will move to the Otto Wagner site.
