European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) moves into Vienna Seestadt
Almost exactly a year ago, a consortium of Austrian business and research partners led by the Vienna University of Technology won out, ensuring that Vienna was selected as one of five locations for an EIT - Manufacturing Innovation Hub.
Yesterday saw the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) celebrate the official opening of its offices in Vienna’s Seestadt Aspern. In the Technology Center Seestadt, just next to Vienna University of Technology’s Pilot Factory, a network will be developed to carry out research into the future of industrial production. The site will be a co-location centre (CLC) for the European Institute of Innovation and Technology’s Manufacturing Hub.
The centre will explore how Europe’s production companies can hold their own against global competition while remaining socially and ecologically sustainable. It will also examine how the rapidly advancing digital revolution is affecting industry and the workplace, and the associated repercussions.
“As Vienna seeks to establish itself as the digital capital of Europe, we have chosen the path of digital humanism. This means that, as we actively seek out the opportunities and challenges of the digital revolution, the benefit to humanity must always be central to our thinking”, explains Peter Hanke, Vienna City Councillor of Business and Digital Innovation. “The arrival of the EIT represents another milestone on our path.”
The EIT CLC couldn’t have found a more suitable technology network to join: it is housed in the Vienna Business Agency’s technology centre, where it is one of 34 companies and research institutes, almost all from the technology and high-tech sector. “Our vision was and remains the establishment of a location for technology, science and production in Vienna’s Seestadt Aspern – a location where opportunities and challenges for production can be actively addressed. We have taken a giant step towards achieving this vision today”, says Gerhard Hircxi, Managing Director of the Vienna Business Agency.
