Startup about to start with 200 bikes in 2nd district!
The Chinese startup ofo will offer its bike-sharing services in Vienna this August. In an initial pilot phase, 200 bicycles will be provided in Vienna’s Leopoldstadt district. The ofo bikes do not require a “docking station” – i.e. a fixed pick-up station – and can be localized and enabled for use via an app. Payments are also made via the app and the bikes will even be available free of charge during the first test phase in Leopoldstadt. Following this test phase, ofo plans to expand its business into additional districts - in particular into districts covering a large geographical area.
Tapping into the European market from Vienna
ofo was founded in 2014 as a student project and has grown considerably since then - 6.5 million ofo bikes are currently available in 150 cities. The Chinese company selected Vienna for strategic reasons, placing particular value on its location in the heart of Europe. Starting from Vienna, ofo will launch test operations in several European cities in August as well. Their goal is to make bicycles the number 1 means of transportation in urban settings.
